Erica Friedland Tufaro earned her BA in Economics and a Master of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, she established her own office in 2001. She completed architecture and design studies in Italy and Japan, and research in Australia and an archeological dig in Turkey. It was her summer in Turkey that inspired her first Young Adult novel, "Dirt".  Erica’s novel draws inspiration from her own experience on an archaeological dig after completing her graduate studies—one last adventure before stepping into the “real world.”
